Level 3

Storm, Tide & Miles Xperience

Briefing

All aboard for a rollicking sail from the Solent to Cherbourg and back, with a route as full of character as a British comedy. You'll be cutting through about 300 nautical miles of historic waters aboard a 40-45ft sailing monohull that's got more charm than a tea shop in the Cotswolds. Mark your calendars for March 23 to March 30, 2024, for this isn't your average jaunt across the pond.

This week-long caper will have you tacking and jibing through the "Wimbledon of Sailing," where the waters are as bustling as Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon. You're not just along for the ride; you'll be part of the crew of 5, getting stuck into everything from hoisting sails to mastering the art of the perfect cuppa at sea.

So, if you're keen for a bit of adventure with a side of cheeky banter, this sailing escapade promises to be as exhilarating as finding a sunlit table at a crowded pub garden.

Ready to set sail on a nautical adventure that's as British as complaining about the weather?

Then, pip pip, cheerio, let's go!

What To Expect

Prepare to immerse yourself in the essence of sailing in one of the world's most celebrated sailing arenas - The Solent and Isle of Wight. This adventure is far from a leisurely cruise; it's an intensive training experience where you'll play a pivotal role as a crew member. Face the challenges of F5 wind forces, fog, night sailing, and navigate through the world's busiest sailing traffic.

From the outset, you'll dive into tidal calculations, passage planning, and familiarize yourself with tidal waters. The training covers essential skills such as port maneuvers, lock handling, day/night watches, and even culinary duties on board. The first two days will be dedicated to mastering tidal waters and passage planning, followed by evenings relishing in the quintessential British pub culture with Stouts and Fish & Chips.

The pinnacle of your training will be the strategic crossing of the English Channel, a 70 nm non-stop sail that will test your newly acquired skills against the elements. Navigation will rely primarily on traditional methods using physical charts, a Portland plotter, and compass, with electronic charts serving as a backup in challenging conditions.

By the end of this voyage, you'll have experienced authentic sailing over tidal waters, a valuable addition to your credentials, especially for those aspiring to achieve the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore certification.

Your guide through this rigorous training will be badass RYA Yachtmaster Instructor, boasting 9 years and over 30,000 Nm of sailing experience, dedicated to preparing you for the exam and the many adventures that lie ahead.
